I spent the last couple of weeks on travel for work and managed to cram in a whole lot of stuff.

I drove some rental cars - Dodge Durango, Chrysler 200, Jeep Patriot. I ate lots of crazy food in both places, drank a whole lot of beer, went to Bourbon Street in NOLA, visited the CMP and purchased an M1D Garand rifle to use in service match competition, and went from terminal C15 to F28 in Chicago O’Hare in 25 minutes.
I also managed to make it to the Poconos this past weekend for a wedding.
So have at it - ask me anything about ships, rentals cars, Mississippi, Wisconsin, you name it.

Is all of Wisconson’s food heavy on dairy products?

Do you drink Whisky? If so, what was the best whisky you had on the trip?

In my experience, yes. I believe everything I ate had some sort of cheese in it. One night I got hashbrowns with dinner, they came with a mountain of sour cream and about 1/2lb of cheese melted all over them. I could feel my arteries hardening, but it was worth it.

In Mississippi, the best beer(s) I had were Tin Roof (Baton Rouge, LA) Blonde Ale and Chandeleur (Gulf Port, MS) Freemason Golden. The Blonde was light and slightly fruity without being too sweet. The Golden was heavier, a littler dryer, but a solid drinking beer.
In Wisconsin my beer of choice was Keweenaw (Houghton, MI) Widow Maker Black Ale. I would describe it like Guinness without the heaviness, and a sweet finish.
I do occasionally drink whiskey, but did not partake of any on these trips.

I might have to try out that Widow Maker Black Ale. I’m in Michigan so it should be find-able.

I would recommend it. It became my go to beer in WI.

About 50% - When I was active duty I never made a single fleet week. That was the sad part of being in a tactical development squadron - op tempo was ridiculous.
It would still be fun to go to one, but I don’t think it holds the same appeal to me that it did when I was in. I can’t strut my stuff in uniform any longer.

I started in reg arty, green side. and then got into the murky territory that is the MHG (MArine Headquarters Gorup) via ANGLICO which actually reports to USSOCOM and receives the funding for a regiment but is barely larger than 2 companies. We would go on deployment and then get handpicked for events like fleet week as soon as we got home. A kind of morale booster, too bad about 70% of the guys were senior and married and more focused on the actual missions we were engaged in.

That’s a pretty impressive resume you got yourself there.
I wasn’t going to say it, but that’s the other reason I don’t think I’d appreciate fleet week as much these days - being married puts certain restrictions on the types of fun you’re allowed to have.

I am a marine engineering for an independent naval architecture firm. My company designed both the original DDG-51 USS Arleigh Burke and the LCS-1 Freedom variant. We continue to support both programs heavily, as well as a number of other programs. At one time we worked almost exclusively for the US Navy, but now we work for other branches of the government, state governments, commercial shipping industry, foreign navies and have even dabbled in private yacht building. We do everything in shipbuilding from requirements development through end of life support... everything that is, except actually build the ships.
Personally, I work in the machinery division of our engineering support group. My main focus is on HVAC systems, but I occasionally get to work in other areas such as propulsion systems. I’d prefer to do that full time, but I have a pretty good thing going at the moment so I don’t poke the hornets nest too much. Because we are a small company, though, we have to be flexible, so occasionally I get tapped to go support inspection efforts. Having a clearance and being prior Navy is a big help.
